Assignment 1: Signature Assignment
Students are strongly advised to save their signature assignments for this course to meet the Portfolio assignment requirement in SW623.
Video-taped role plays
Rationale: These assignments are designed to give students the opportunity to learn and demonstrate interviewing and data collection skills. Both assignments require students to use reflective listening and reflexive questioning and prompts you to understand the contexts in which the consumer system lives, how societal influences impact those systems and how understanding strengths contribute to effective problem resolution. It will also provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate professional comportment as a social worker, with particular attention to boundary issues.
Directions: You are required to participate in two 10-15 minute (approximate length) video-taped role plays. In each role play you will be the social worker. The first role play, completed at the beginning of the semester, involves you (as a social worker) and a “client”. Preferably the “client” will be a BSW student from our class or another SW 510 class.
-During this video you will role play an initial rapport building session w/ your client based on a practice area of your choice (substance use, child welfare, hospice, etc). How might you introduce yourself? How might you acclimate your client to their surrounding and structure the meeting?
-During this video what might you discuss confidentiality. How would you introduce this to a client? How might you introduce exceptions to confidentiality?
-During this video you might also plan to incorporate planning for future appointments or expectations.
The first video tape will be turned in along with a 2 page reflection of your strengths and weaknesses regarding your initial session. Were you able to build rapport? Would you change any of questions you ask or how you explained something? How well did you demonstrate empathy? Did you miss something you felt was important? If completing this assignment over zoom you might also consider reflecting on advantages and challenges of telebealth.
The second role play, will be completed at the middle of the semester, involves you (as a social worker) and a “client”. Preferably the “client” will be a BSW student from our class or another SW 510 class.
-During this video you will role play completing an assessment w/ your client. The assessment will be discussed in week 2, 3, and 4. You should pick from one of the assessments discussed in class: ecomap, genogram, strengths and needs assessment, biopsychosocial assessment.
The 2nd videotape will be turned in along with a 5-7 page reflection about what you learned, as well as what you might have changed and your comfortability with the assessment. You you should include a comparative analysis of the two tapes. The student playing the client in the role play should be prepared to give you verbal or written feedback after viewing the videos. This feedback should be included in your reflection. If completing this assignment over zoom you might also consider reflecting on advantages and challenges of telebealth.
