For this assignment, I want you to focus on an issue of Biology that interests you.
he first
step of this project is to choose a topic and develop a thesis statement regarding this topic. A thesis is
defined as a “statement or theory put forward as a premise to be maintained or proved.” Here is a non-
biology example of a topic and thesis statement:
Topic: Family-friendly cars used in the United States
Thesis: Relative to other available options, minivans are the best family-friendly car due to their
affordability, functionality, and engineering geared specifically toward the needs of families.
Please feel free to ask Dr. Chamberlain if you have questions regarding how to best develop a topic and
thesis statement. Also, feel free to come to office hours or send emails to discuss your thesis prior to
writing your paper.
EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY: For extra credit, you may have your paper reviewed by a tutor from the
SCTCC Center for Academic Success. To receive the extra credit, you will have to submit an electronic
client note (you may need to ask the tutor to email this to you). You must submit the client note by
December 18th at 11:59pm to receive extra credit. Please note that utilizing the CAS is not required forthis assignment, but if you do so you will receive extra credit.
Format:
Length: 3-4 pages (double-spaced). This length does not include your references
Font: 12pt Arial
Margins: 0.5 inch margins (top/bottom/left/right).

Guidelines for Content:
Background: This should be roughly ½ to 1 page in length. Describe what is known about your subject.
You need not cover everything, rather you should make choices about what you think is important. Be
sure to consider why certain information may be pertinent while other information is superfluous (this
doesn’t need to be explained in your paper, but it should be a part of your thought process). You must
cite work in an acceptable style.
Significance: Describe why your topic is important. How does it impact people/places/things? Why
should we care about it? Should take ~ ½ page.
Thesis statement: Describe your thesis statement. How does it pertain to your topic of choice. Also, why
is it important or significant?
Thesis argument: Provide evidence to support your thesis. Are there alternative views (i.e. other ideas
that might disagree with your thesis?). Can you point to evidence that suggests why your argument
might be superior to others? Are there obstacles that might stand in the way of people accepting your
thesis? How can these obstacles be overcome? There are a lot of directions that you can take with this
part of your paper. Be creative and explore your topic/thesis in detail. This should take up 2-3 pages.
**The above are guidelines to your paper. You may choose to craft it in a unique way, but you must
cover the basics.
Citations:
Given that this is a 3-4 page paper, you should have roughly 6-8 sources that you use (roughly 2 per
page). One of your citations must be from a peer-reviewed source. Do not overuse quotations. Quoting
directly from a source should be done rarely (and only when absolutely necessary). You should only
have 1-2 lines per page (maximum) that are direct quotes from sources. It is ok to put information from
a reliable source in your own words, as long as you properly cite the information. This can be a primary
article (i.e. a paper describing results of a scientific experiment) or a review article. However, the source
must be peer reviewed
