Human Physiology assignment

· Describe how we perceive wavelengths and amplitude of sound waves differently.

· Explain how sound waves are transduced to electrical signals in the ear (and note where it’s happening).

· Describe the relationship between the ciliary muscles, zonule ligaments, and lens shape when a) you need to focus on an object close to you and b) you need to focus on an object > 20 feet away from you.

· What are homonymous vs. heteronymous hemianopia? What is the distinction between the two?

· List in the structures light must pass through from the time it enters the eye until it reaches the retina.

· Explain absolute vs. relative refractory periods. Specifically address what is happening to voltage-gated sodium and potassium channels during these periods. Can another action potential be fired during the absolute or relative refractory period? Explain why or why not.

· Describe upper and lower motor neurons. How are they different from one another?

· Explain what occurs for the pupillary reflex. Explain both afferent and efferent pathways.

· Indicate the neurotransmitters and receptors for the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system at the synapses between the pre- and post-ganglionic nerves and between the post-ganglionic nerves and the target organs

· Create a table with the cellular organelles. One column should list the organelle, the next column should list the function of that organelle, and the third column should indicate what type of consequence you would expect if that organelle did not function properly. Stating the “cell would die” is an insufficient answer. You need to indicate why it would die.

· Find a photo of a neuron and paste in your document (please cite your source!). Label each part of the nerve, and indicate basic processes (integration center, receive info, send an action potential, have a graded potential, etc) occurring along the length of the nerve cell.

· What is the relationship between myelination, nerve length and nerve diameter. Which combination would result in the fastest action potential? Which combination would result in the slowest action potential?

· What is acetylcholinesterase and why is it important? What would happen if Acetylcholinesterase was no longer able to perform its function?

Note: You MAY use your textbook or other sources to seek information and clarification, but you MUST paraphrase appropriately and provide references for the material. Failure to do so represents plagiarism and will be managed according the policy in the student handbook.
